On this warm, rainy, and windy day, living as a mom was a bit trying and interesting to say the least. Where do I start?

This morning, as the kids and I were almost ready to head out the door, I ran to fix a cup of coffee for the road. (Leaving the kids alone is almost never a good idea, but I really needed a cup of coffee.) While I was in the kitchen, I heard running up and down the hall. When I ran upstairs, I discovered that C4 and A2 decided to smear lotion all over the dollies, in A2’s hair, and all over the couch. Then they gave the dollies a bath in the bathroom sink and both got soaked in the process. This is not the first time they have gotten a hold of the lotion and moisturized the toys, so I was pretty angry with both of them! I think it’s a sensory thing, and I hope that we can move past this behavior soon! (C4 has Sensory Processing Disorder, aka SPD. If your kids also have SPD, I recommend Patty O’s Blog, Pancakes Gone Awry, for some comradery.) I quickly changed both kids, which was remarkably easy (thankfully), since we were already running late and rushed them out of the house for preschool.

When A2 and I arrived home, I called a friend and invited her and her two kids over for a play date. As they headed down my path to the front door, a huge gust of wind knocked an enormous branch down on right on top of my car – right behind my friend and her kids! My windshield was crushed, the side rear view mirror was knocked off, and a door was dented in the process. Fortunately, my friend and her kids had already moved away from the car by the time it all happened. Thank you, Jesus, that my friend and her kids were out of harm’s way!

I spent the visit with our friends calling E, the babysitter, and my mother-in-law trying to organize transportation and child care for the afternoon. (It figures that this sort of thing would happen on a day when I have a doctor’s appointment to get to!) Somehow I was able to get my mother-in-law to lend me her car for the afternoon, and E was able to reserve a rental car with an agency that would pick me up. (E is my hero!) When my friend left, A2 and I went to pick C4 up from preschool. I talked about the plan with the kids and they panicked a bit. There were questions about how the car seats would get into the new car and where they would be and on and on. Thankfully, our child care provider agreed to keep the kids until after I picked up the rental car. I didn’t want to subject any of us to the stress that the car issue was causing.

Once I picked the kids up from daycare in the rental, they actually were excited about the “new” car. C4 even wanted to buy the car. Go figure! All in all, it was an eventful day! I am looking forward to a new day tomorrow – maybe one that is less eventful!
